Current Mood: frustrated
So, Bioshock: I have never played the System Shock games, but this one had me right off the bat. Why? It's set in the 60's, in a civil war, in an underwater city built to be an objectivist utopia. Sure, it has other cool features like plasmids to give you various powers, but really, it's a fictional examination of Ayn Rand's terrbile philosophy where I get to light things on fire. I should be playing right now. Why aren't I? because on Sunday i thought it would be a good idea to buy it using Steam. "Hey, i'll get home on Tuesday, and it'll be ready to play!" I thought.
Wrong.
8 hours of downloading on the weekend.
20 minutes of decrypting, and now more than an hour and a half of waiting while it updates.
If I can remember this, I won't be buying any non-Valve product over Steam again. Because I could have driven to the store and had a shiny box and manuals and disk by now, and start playing at about the same time. BAH!

When HL2 came out I bought it the first day. I took it home, excited to play it. It was the first game in years that I'd purchased that I was excited about.

I installed it using those discs, and Steam died. For hours. It took me 8-9 hours to decrypt the damn game, on the discs that I owned and held in my hands. If HL2 had been a decent or complete game I might have forgiven them, but it was neither. Consequently I refuse to have anything to do with Valve products or distribution methods.

I've been happier since I made that particular decision.

4 hours later....

My video card, Radeon X850pro, is not supported. I wouldn't be able to play either way. I'm going to see if i can get a refund, since I have no intention of upgrading my hardware this year. Buying and Xbox 360 Elite, and a 360 copy of the game, would be cheaper. Also, at this time, I'm not feeling like giving 2K or Valve any more of my patronage. Valve wasted my time, and 2K games didn't bother to support some video card thing, even thought the Unreal engine they uses could have. From the forums, I see they didn't even support Widescreen resolution properly.

It's (not) funny, I actually looked at the Bioshock website for technical requirements before I ordered it. In the future, I'll have to be more diligent.
